Visual Plan is proud to be a strategic partner to Orion Entrance Control, Inc., implementing 3D Digital Twins into their customer success processes during pre-sales, design, collaboration, project management, commissioning and training of Orion SpeedGate and SpeedLane turnstiles, and the new line of Constellation Sensor products. Visualization and collaboration through Visual Plan’s platform is a key strategy to further enhance Orion’s current customer success protocols, ensuring future performance, compatibility and implementation of security system design across their product lines.

As a visual data hub, Visual Plan’s SiteView platform is optimized for the level of enhanced collaboration and documentation necessary for ensuring project certainty and building customer satisfaction through comprehensive, secure and accessible site visualization.

  • Enhanced visibility of sensor and turnstile placement
  • Interactive and documented record of installation details, including components behind walls or above ceiling tiles
  • Improved communication throughout the project lifecycle, from design to implementation to maintenance

“For larger security system design and sensor projects, Visual Plan provides an extra layer of oversight to ensure project success with limited rework or costly site visits, saving partners and customers money, decreasing turnaround time while gaining the best outcomes for Orion’s projects.”

– Kelly Watt, CEO, Visual Plan

Challenges: Lack of comprehensive visibility causes Costly rework, downtime and client satisfaction

Orion’s Constellation™ Sensors are powered by Xandar Kardian (XK) Technology. Downtown Vancouver’s Park Place building facility management team faced numerous challenges with a 700+ XK sensor and gateway installation due to the on-site integrator’s placement techniques and sensor positioning. The installed sensor and gateway network included placements underneath desks, tucked into cubicles and hidden behind ceiling panels across 6 floors of office space.

Without existing thorough documentation and virtual walkthroughs of the installed XK sensor system, troubleshooting the installation placements quickly became expensive:

  • travel costs ($$$): 5 on-site trips were made by technical support groups, including team members from South Korea, costing around $9k
  • rework ($$$): significant % of the sensors had to be recalibrated or reinstalled due to poor placement, costing around $5k
  • downtime ($$$): the sensor and gateway installation process took months, resulting in extended periods of facility downtime
  • time ($$$): considerable time was spent on-site attempting to locate the above-ceiling gateways
  • client satisfaction ($$$): the client was dramatically impacted due to of lack of sensor location documentation

In order to create long-term success for this client post-installation, Orion brought in the Visual Plan team to create a virtual walkthrough of the finalized, successful sensor and gateway installation in order to prevent these troubleshooting pitfalls over the lifetime of the integrated system.

Solution: 3D Digital Twins for XK Sensor Series Installation Ongoing Maintenance & Management

After the successful implementation of the sensors and gateway installation, Visual Plan brought our remotely-piloted 360 Rovers equipped with Ricoh Theta Z1 cameras to perform a 360 capture of the facility. The optical height on the 360 Rover was lowered to scan under desks and equipment while tripods were used to capture above ceiling panels, effectively creating an as-installed, walkable Digital Twin of the sensor and gateway system installation.

  • Captured scans show existing sensor and gateway installations for on-site maintenance and remote troubleshooting with the manufacturer, integrator and building owners
  • Annotated 360 scans serve as post-installation as-built conditions of the entire sensor and gateway system
  • Full documentation of the sensors including spatially aligned 360 photos, annotations, uploaded documents and asset tagging information enable efficient operations management and security training for facility managers

Dynamic, searchable, remotely-accessible visualization of the complete 700+ sensors and gateways, their locations within the building, and their asset information will be critical for future sensor maintenance, gateway troubleshooting and future network expansion. This visualization will save countless hours of searching for and identifying sensors across the 6 floors of the Park Place building.

Critical Features for Success

Orion and their Park Place clients continue to see benefits from implementing Visual Plan into the XK sensor and gateway lifecycle management process. Internal teams can use the captured facility and sensor scans to gain virtual oversight, quickly identify issues, communicate effectively with remote troubleshooting teams, and streamline decision making all from a single source: the Visual Plan SiteView platform.
